Sun Fun

Whether it’s the swimming pool or riding bikes, summer fun is a blast!  But it’s important to protect sensitive skin against the sun.  In young kids, keep sensitive skin covered with hats and clothing as much as possible.  Avoid peak sun while swimming (10am-4pm).

These sunscreens contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and create a physical block for both UVA and UVB rays.  These sunscreens are inert and are not absorbed into your child’s skin. Mineral sunscreens are usually chalky white and are active as long as you can see white on your child’s skin.

Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing UV rays.  Chemical sunscreens should be avoided until 6-months of age.  They need to be applied more frequently, at least every two hours – more frequently if your child is sweating.  An SPF of 30 or higher is recommended for kids, and ideally a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.  Avoid sunscreens with fragrances or dyes as these increase the risk of causing skin irritation.
